Tryouts/Practice Information

Official varsity practices will start on Monday, July 31st. The varsity will have a walk-through practice from 2-3pm and then a full practice from 6-8pm. This will be the base schedule until our Freshman Focus Program and the start of classes.

Enroll & maintain athlete eligibility with Appryse. All families are required to re-activate enrollment each school year. Keep medical history info and participation physicals up-to-date online.

  • Head Coach

    Coach Wright grew up in Maitland, FL. where he attended Winter Park High School (Winter Park, FL). While at Winter Park he lettered in 4 varsity sports (Football, Baseball, Track & Field, Weightlifting) and served as a captain his senior season, earning All-Conference, All-County and All-Area honors in both Football and Weightlifting. After graduation, Coach Wright attended the University of Central Florida (UCF) where he earned an athletic scholarship, started for four years as a defensive back, served as a team captain and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. Since then, he has gone on to earn a doctoral degree, while professionally he has worked as a teacher and coach focusing in the areas of Football and Strength & Conditioning.

    Coach Wright is entering his 12th year as a high school head coach, having spent the last six at Cardinal Gibbons where his varsity teams have compiled 56 wins and his program 126 total wins over that same period. He and his staff have won 2 Varsity conference titles, 5 Junior Varsity conference titles, gone undefeated two times with the Freshman football team and have twice been honored with conference coach of the year awards.

    Coach Wright's mission at CGHS is to "develop godly young men" who demonstrate the biblical values of love, sacrifice, service, accountability, community and joy. He is married to Rachel-Ruth Wright, they have three daughters and reside in Raleigh, NC.

  • Associate Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator

    Coach Liedy is originally from Rockville Centre, NY where he was a captain and 4 year varsity starter in football and baseball at South Side High School. He attended The Ohio State University and received a B.S. in Education in 2004. He received an M.S. in Sport Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2007.

    From 2007-2011, Liedy was the offensive line coach, director of football operations, adjunct professor, and assistant intramurals director at Mount Ida College in Newton, MA. Prior to that, he was a football intern at the University of Richmond, receivers coach at Pace University, and an assistant coach at both Olentangy High School in Lewis Center, OH, and South Side High School in Rockville Centre, NY

    He resides in Apex, NC, with his wife Rachalle, a 5th grade teacher at Immaculata Catholic School in Durham, NC, their son Luke, and their dog Chloe.

  • Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator

    Coach Phillippi is a native of Charlotte, NC and a graduate of Providence High School. While at Providence he played football for one of the best programs in the state. After graduation he attended Campbell University, where he studied exercise physiology and played defensive back for the football program. He went on to serve as a graduate assistant, earning his masters degree and gaining valuable coaching experience. Coach Phillippi was then hired as a full time assistant working with both the linebackers and defensive backs over his six year tenure at Campbell. He concluded his time at Campbell as the recruiting coordinator, defensive backs coach and earned the "Assistant Coach of the Year" award for Campbell University.

    This is Coach Phillippi's first season at Cardinal Gibbons. He serves as the Defensive Coordinator and works with the linebackers. Coach Phillippi is married to Julie and resides in Raleigh, NC.

    Brad Altice has a passion for place kicking, punting and coaching youth to be successful. After 10 years of playing soccer Brad began to play football as a place kicker at Hoggard HS in Wilmington NC. Brad then played for ECU. Brad graduated from UNC Wilmington with a degree in Management Information Systems. He worked at IBM for 15 years and now serves as a Childrens Pastor at Southbridge Fellowship

    Born in 1963 in Boston, Mass. Herbert Anthony Thames moved to Manning, SC in the 7th grade. Having a love for sports and health, he attended Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina. He received his degree in Health and Physical Education and was a member of the football program. Coach Thames has been employed by Wake County Public Schools as a Healthful Living teacher for 25 years. He has served as head football, basketball and track coach at West Cary Middle School. He also coached football and basketball for 3 years in Manning, SC. After returning to NC, he was the Head JV girls basketball coach at Green Hope High School from 2000-2009. Coach Thames has been coaching varsity linebackers for 5 years at CGHS, and also served as the freshman teams’ defensive coordinator this season.

    Herb recently got married to his lovely wife Charlene. He also has 2 sons Lawrence (27) and Teyon (25) and a grandson Tarence (6). Serving the LORD is #1 on coach’s list, but he also enjoys fishing, hiking, and playing sports.

  • Offensive Assistant

    Ron Clark is Lenoir NC. Ron graduated from South Caldwell High School. He received his BS in Physical Education from East Carolina University in May of 1983. Ron Received his National Board certification on the fall of 2002. He began his teaching and coaching career with Person County Schools in the fall of 1987. Ron has been with Wake County Schools since 1991. He has taught at Enloe High School since 1992. Ron served as Head Football coach at Enloe from 2003-2011. Prior to that tRon was an assistant football coach at Enloe for 11 seasons. Ron was also the Head Girls track coach for 10 year and Head Boys Track coach for 4 years. He currently serves as Assistant Athletic Director at Enloe. Ron is married to his wife Susan and has 3 children Ryan, Courtney and Cameron

The Cardinal Gibbons Football program completed another record setting season in 2016, tying a school record for wins (12), setting a new points per game mark (42.3 ppg), making a 10th consecutive NCHSAA post-season appearance and earning a trip to the eastern semi-finals. Things continue to look bright for the Crusaders as they welcome an undefeated freshman team as well as the 2-time defending PAC-6 JV champions to the varsity ranks for 2017.
