2014 Season Wrap-up: Women's Tennis wins second straight state championship

The Varsity Women's tennis team earned its second straight 3-A State Championship in the 2014, defeating Asheville by a score of 5-1 in the state finals. The win completed an undefeated 28-0 season and extended the Crusaders winning streak to 53 matches, dating back to August 2013. The Varsity Women's tennis team earned its second 3-A State Championship in the fall of 2013, defeating Weddington by a score of 5-1 in the state finals. 2012 Season Wrap-up: Women's Tennis claims conference title

Anthony Palumbo

The women’s varsity tennis team suffered a tough loss in the semifinals to Nash Central on November 11, finishing their season 19-7 overall and 10-0 in conference play.

The team returned seven players from 2011, but only three played in the top six last year, meaning three girls were competing in the top six for the first time in 2012.

The team knew it would be a difficult task to recover from after losing that many seniors, but they were up for the challenge.

"After winning States for the first time last year, there was pressure on us to defend our title, even though we lost some of our good seniors. I think we handled the challenge and pressure very well and gave every competition we faced a good fight," said sophomore Maggie Reilly, one of the returning players from the 2011 squad.

2011 Season Wrap-up: Women's Tennis wins first state championship

The Cardinal Gibbons Varsity Women's Tennis team claimed its first-ever State Championship in the fall of 2011, defeating Charlotte Catholic by a score of 5-4 in the finals. The win completed a thrilling final week of the season in which the Crusaders also won the East Regional Finals over Nash Central by a 5-4 margin. Also in 2011, Lauren Brooker and Caroline Smith won the 3-A State Championship in Doubles, with a win over a duo from Weddington in the finals, marking the first time a women's tennis pairing from Gibbons had claimed the title. Brooker previously won the 2-A State Singles Championship as a freshman in 2008.

Overall, Gibbons finished the 2011 season with a 25-5 record, and claimed the Carolina Conference Championship with a 10-0 record in conference. The Crusaders also claimed the Championship at the Battle of the Beach Tournament held in Pawley's Island, South Carolina in September. This season was the fourth time Gibbons has made the trip to the State Finals, previously finishing as State Runners-Up in 2006, 2008 and 2010.
