Theology

In the history of Catholic thought, Theology has long been considered the "Queen of the Sciences," being understood as the academic discipline whose subject matter constitutes the foundation necessary for the confident pursuit of knowledge and Truth in any discipline.

“Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth—in a word, to know himself—so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves.”
-
Saint John Paul the Great

With this in mind, the Theology Department at Cardinal Gibbons seeks to instill in students the intellectual and ethical education necessary to most fully live a life of faith in accordance with the teachings of Jesus Christ, the message of the Gospel, the lives of the saints, and, more broadly speaking, the first principles of the Philosophia Perennis as glimpsed in the world's religions and philosophies, but found most fully in the the teachings of the Church.

Such an education properly includes emphases on both academic instruction and faith formation. To that end, Theology department courses encourage students to see the essential connection between Catholic thought and life, and invite them to explore how the Catholic worldview (1) provides the meaning and coherence necessary to understand the place and role of humanity in creation, and (2) offers an intellectually compelling alternative to the secular/materialistic worldviews that have come to be dominant in the post-Enlightenment West.

All Theology courses either conform to the curriculum guidelines proposed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops or are intended to compliment those guidelines. For more information or other inquiries, please email the Theology department chair at rmartin@cghsnc.org.
