A Brighter Christmas for Children in Need

“All children should experience the excitement and joy of waking up to presents on Christmas,” said Ursula Karazin, a Gibbons math educator and the moderator of the National Honor Society (NHS), which sponsors the event. “Being able to help so many children through the generosity of our Gibbons community, and knowing that we have made Christmas a little more special for these children this year is a blessing.”

‘Tis the season … for the Toy and Clothing Drive. The Cardinal Gibbons school community is making the holidays brighter for children in need through its annual drive, a longstanding Christmas tradition.

For this year’s 33rd drive the Gibbons family, over the last week, collected toys and clothes for 92 children who attend Beginning and Beyond Daycare Center in downtown Raleigh. “They are each receiving a winter coat, a pair of shoes, several outfits, pajamas, and toys.  That means we will be giving away close to 100 coats,” said Ursula Karazin, a Gibbons math educator and the moderator of the National Honor Society (NHS), which sponsors the event.

The toys and clothing were packed by some 150 Gibbons student volunteers yesterday and will be delivered to the daycare center tomorrow. There will also be a surprise for the center’s 10 teachers – a gift card for each.

This annual Gibbons tradition brings to life not only the school’s mission of faith, service, and leadership, but also the proverb, “It’s better to give than to receive,” especially during the holiday season.

“All children should experience the excitement and joy of waking up to presents on Christmas,” said Karazin. “Being able to help so many children through the generosity of our Gibbons community, and knowing that we have made Christmas a little more special for these children this year is a blessing.”

Students agree. Just ask juniors Clare Scott ’19 and Olivia Bretzius ’19.

“Being able to participate in the toy and clothing drive this year as a class representative, an NHS member, and a student allowed me to see, in person, the impact our service has on the lives of these children,” said Olivia.  Clare agreed and added, “the toy and clothing drive perfectly represents the mission of Cardinal Gibbons because an entire school community is able to come together to help donate items to make Christmas brighter for these children.”
