Growing Together in Faith

“As we journey through Advent, I hope we can also journey to the past and encounter Christ through the infancy narratives of Christianity’s earliest communities. And, in doing so, I hope that we’ll be able to breathe new life into the all too familiar stories of Jesus’ birth.” Phillip Tobin Theology educator

"In Advent, we rediscover the beauty of all being on a journey ... across the paths of time."  Pope Francis

Beginning last night and for the next four Tuesday evenings theology educator Phillip Tobin continues a Gibbons Christmas tradition, holding an Advent Reflection seminar for parents and friends to come together in joyful preparation to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

According to the class description, parents will be given the opportunity to engage in the critical meaning of the Infancy Narratives within the Gospels of Luke and Matthew and begin to unpack the complex theology of the incarnation... "As we journey through Advent," Tobin said, "I hope we can also journey to the past and encounter Christ through the infancy narratives of Christianity's earliest communities. And, in doing so, I hope that we'll be able to breathe new life into the all too familiar stories of Jesus' birth."

Each of the classes will include a lecture, reading and discussion of the biblical texts, and prayer, Tobin said, and added: "We may find ourselves in the chapel on more than one occasion." Some 20 Gibbons parents and friends have registered for the Reflection Series, now in its fifth year. It is offered by the school's Theology Department and has been taught by different theology educators. This is the first year Mr. Tobin is teaching the series. He said he uses icons, like the one pictured above, to encourage parents to explore and come to know the mystery of the Messiah, whose coming we await in joyful preparation.

"I look forward to discussing these biblical texts with other adults, whose mature faith and life experiences are sure to lead to interesting and enlightening revelations about Jesus and scriptures truth," he added.

This year's classes are being held from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm in Room 115. The three remaining classes take place on December 5, 12, & 19.

Principal Jason Curtis described the Advent Reflection series as a special Christmas tradition at Gibbons. It is, he said, a great way for parents not only to share similar formational opportunities that their children receive at Cardinal Gibbons, but also a chance for our parent community to grow together in faith.
