Academic leadership transition

After nearly 25 years of dedicated service to Cardinal Gibbons, Nancy Barkan will step down from her role as Assistant Head of School for Academics at the end of this school year.

Mrs. Barkan has been instrumental in shaping the academic foundation of our school. Her legacy includes launching the teacher mentor program, building a strong framework for professional development, leading the rollout of our one-to-one laptop initiative, and guiding us with steady leadership through the challenges of the pandemic.

She also spearheaded the development of our Portrait of a Learner and helped define the educational philosophy that continues to guide our curriculum and instruction today.

“Through every initiative, Mrs. Barkan has helped anchor our academic life in purpose, innovation, and a deep commitment to both students and educators,” said Head of School Jeff Bell.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Mrs. Barkan’s care and compassion have profoundly influenced the culture of our school.

“Her steady presence, thoughtful leadership, and significant vision have made a lasting impact on what it feels like to teach and learn at Gibbons,” Mr. Bell said.

Although Mrs. Barkan is stepping away from her current position, she will continue to support the school community as a mentor and proud Gibbons parent.

Jen Cipriano Hammersley ’04 will serve as Interim Academic Dean. An alumna in her 16th year at Gibbons, Mrs. Hammersley brings a deep understanding of our academic programs, a collaborative leadership approach, and strong relationships throughout our community.  She currently serves as registrar and was a math educator for 12 years before taking on that role.

“Mrs. Hammersley brings a student-centered mindset, a collaborative spirit, and a calm, thoughtful leadership style that has earned the trust of educators, students, and families across the community,” Mr. Bell said. “She is a steady and mission-driven leader who exemplifies the values and heart of the Gibbons experience.”

Mrs. Hammersley’s leadership, paired with Mrs. Barkan’s ongoing mentorship, will ensure a strong foundation as we search for a permanent academic leader. Further details about the search will be shared later.

Please join us in expressing heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Barkan for her extraordinary contributions and in welcoming Mrs. Hammersley into this new leadership role.
