Educator Spotlight | Carli Domingos, English
What do you love most about the subject area you teach?
What I love most about teaching English is the unique opportunity to learn alongside students. Most of my classes rely heavily on discussion-based activities, so I often learn as much from my students as they do from me. I am grateful to witness their poignant, intellectual, and thoughtful comments about what it means to be human and experience the world as a young adult.
How long have you been in the teaching profession?
This is my third year at Gibbons and my fourth year in Education.
If you were not a teacher, what profession would you have chosen?
If I were not a teacher, I would love to work for a publishing company or write for a magazine. I am passionate about writing and sharing stories, so that both jobs would be incredible experiences!
What makes Gibbons a unique/different place?
What makes Gibbons so unique to me is how educators truly care about their students' whole identities. I am lucky to work alongside genuinely compassionate, selfless individuals who love their work. Whether leading weekend retreats, working track meets, attending musicals, or staying after school to help students better understand the material, the educators here consistently show up for their students in ways beyond the classroom.
What is your favorite Gibbons tradition?
I am a bit partial to the “Wagon Wheel” tradition! Every Friday, during each passing period, Mr. Blake carries on the tradition of playing Wagon Wheel on his CD player. It is a great morale booster at the end of each week, and I love that it is distinct from the English hallway. Another honorable mention is Freshmen Welcome Day – I am always so pleasantly surprised each year that so many upperclassmen who don’t HAVE to be at school that day choose to be here to welcome in the new class. We have some pretty special students.
