Educator Spotlight | Mark Cashin, Fine Arts Educator

What do you love most about the subject area you teach?
I love that our music curriculum is different every year. We may play a few of the same songs, but each school year, the cohort of band and percussion students changes. This allows me to craft a tailored experience with each concert the students put on. You will always be amazed at what they can perform, and every concert will provide a unique experience for our performers and audience members.

How long have you been in the teaching profession?
This is my 15th year teaching and 10th year teaching at Gibbons. I cannot believe I have been here a decade!

If you were not a teacher, what profession would you have chosen?
My passions outside of music revolve around sports. I enjoy watching UNC athletics, Hurricanes Hockey, and New York Yankees baseball. I would have loved to be a broadcaster for ESPN or work with a professional sports franchise!

What makes Gibbons a unique/different place?
Gibbons is a Christ-centered environment, and being able to pray with and for one another in the classroom deepens and strengthens our relationships as educators with our students. I feel like I can be my true self as a Catholic educator at Gibbons, where I could not do that in any other school environment.

What is your favorite Gibbons tradition?
I have two favorite Gibbons traditions. My first is seeing the Football Team go through the Bleachers while the Band plays the NFL on FOX. My second is seeing all the graduates march into Reynolds Coliseum while the band plays Pomp and Circumstance!
