House crests unveiled
The official crests for our school’s house system were unveiled during Catholic Schools Week, ushering in a new era of pride and unity. Each crest represents the unique spirit and values of its house. Two of the designs were created by talented students: Mollie Reeves designed the Notre Dame crest, and Sarah Kolodziejksi ‘25 crafted the St. Monica crest.
Learn about the symbolism behind each crest below.
Dominican
Cross: Represents the Catholic faith within our school community.
Heart: Symbolizes Sacred Heart Academy, founded by the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh in 1909, which later became Cardinal Gibbons.
Oak Tree: Represents the former Gibbons campus on Western Boulevard, where the Dominican Sisters led for 63 years.
Franciscan
Tau Cross: A Franciscan cross adopted by St. Francis as a symbol of devotion to Christ. The Franciscans who guided Gibbons wore it as a representation of their faith.
Dove: Symbolizes St. Francis, his patronage of animals, and the concept of peace.
Notre Dame
Designed by Mollie Reeves ‘26
Door: Symbolizes how the Sisters of Notre Dame welcomed new people, places, and opportunities into the school.
Light: Shining from the doorway, it represents both the renewal of school spirit and the presence of the Holy Spirit.
St. Monica
Designed by Sarah Kolodziejksi ‘25
Cross: Symbolizes our unity through faith and community.
Broom: Represents St. Martin De Porres and honors St. Monica School as a place of change in a divided society.
Arch: Signifies our solidarity as Gibbons students, educators, and faculty, while also referencing the arched doorway of St. Monica School.
