COVID-19 Task Force Update - July 8
Jeff Bell

Dear Gibbons Community,

I hope that you had a safe and restful holiday weekend. Thank you for the kind notes and responses to my message last week. It is truly a blessing to be a part of such a thoughtfully engaged community.

Given the endlessly shifting nature of our current moment, you can expect a weekly email from me that will provide you with updates as we gear up for the school year. While I believe that clear and consistent communication should always be a part of the Gibbons experience, it is paramount during this time of uncertainty. I hope that you will find these updates useful and informative. I welcome your feedback.

As I mentioned in my communication last week, the Governor has not yet provided the anticipated information and guidance about the reopening of schools. While we are not beholden, per se, to what the Governor decides, we are awaiting direction from him as well as the Diocese before we make the specifics of our reopening plans public. What I can share with you is that the educators and the COVID-19 Task Force are working assiduously on those plans, and we are laser-focused on the goal of having students back--safely and with all necessary precautions implemented--on campus in August.

Here’s what you can expect once students return to campus:

  • All students, educators, and visitors will wear masks.

  • A thorough health screening of everyone who enters the building will be conducted.

  • The entire facility will be cleaned often with enhanced cleaning products and procedures.

  • A revised daily schedule will allow for longer classes and fewer transitions during the school day to ensure a high level of safety.

  • Social distancing will be the norm within the school.

  • Clear protocols will be established for reporting if or when a community member becomes infected with COVID-19.

I also would like parents to take a few minutes to fill out Gibbons Family Reopening Plan Survey. The information you provide will help us to shape the school's reopening plan.

Additionally, I want to encourage you to review the following document from the American Academy of Pediatrics. It provides useful information and a reassuring perspective about returning to school.

For new families, it has been wonderful to see so many of you on campus this week! I hope you are starting to get a good feel for the Gibbons experience. On Monday, July 13, we will hold our first Zoom meeting with Class of 2024 parents, and we've also added two evening sessions of Freshman Hello Pods on that day for students and parents of the Class of 2024. Please visit for more information and to register for either event.

For returning families, we will be setting up some Zoom calls/webinars starting the week of July 20. I would love to get to know you better and give you the opportunity to ask questions about the year ahead.

I continue to be humbled and honored to serve the Gibbons community. I look forward to seeing you all soon!

COVID-19 Task Force Update -June 17
Office of Communications

The task force is developing a plan for the 2020-21 school year that offers the best possible educational environment with appropriate safety and support for all members of our community, given the ongoing health crisis caused by COVID-19.

Given so many unknowns, we are looking at multiple scenarios, but we’re starting with the assumption that we will be able to come together physically at school in some form this fall. Our objectives are focused on delivering the same high-quality Gibbons experience while providing for the safety of our community and maintaining flexibility to adapt to changing conditions.

Current progress
As you can imagine, there is much to consider, and circumstances and decisions in one area impact and overlap those in another. To tackle this effort, we’ve divided up our current work into the following workstreams:

Facility usage and protocols
This team is evaluating our space and planning for safety, physical distancing, and all needed adjustments to the physical environment.

Curriculum and Remote Learning
This team is looking at curriculum and schedule options, including combinations of remote and in-person learning, investigating the best possible teacher training for online learning, and developing a clear and equitable grading policy.

Medical Policies and Procedures
This team is keeping us all on top of current guidelines and best practices to minimize virus transmission, and establishing policy for accommodating anyone who feels unsafe coming to school. It also is creating a protocol for responding to an infection and considering resources to support the physical and mental health of our students, staff, and families.

This team is looking closely at the financial impact that COVID is having on Gibbons and closely monitoring the budget to ensure that educators, administrators, and students have all that they need for a great Gibbons experience.

Community input and communications
This team is committed to sharing clear and consistent updates throughout the summer, and we’ll be asking for input as we go. Our current focus is on understanding the hopes and fears of our community as an essential input to the scenario planning outlined above.

With the solid foundation above, we’ll move forward on developing other aspects of our 2020-2021 Plan, and sharing along the way. If you have any specific questions, concerns, or ideas, please don’t hesitate to contact us via the comments section on this page. Thank you for your support.
