ACT overview
Administered by The ACT.
- Schedule: Offered seven times per school year
- Testing Format: Digital or paper testing is available.
- Content: Three required sections—English, Math, Reading. There is an optional Science section that we recommend you take. There is also an optional Writing section that is not needed for college admissions and is not recommended.
- Scoring: Each required section receives a subscore. These are averaged to create a single composite score. The science score is separate.
- Score range: The highest possible score is 36 for each section and for the composite.
- Guessing: No penalty for guessing.
- Superscoring: Some schools consider the highest subscores from multiple test dates when reviewing applications.
