Robert Kelly poses with Andrew Tuttle, tennis coach.

Robert Kelly made history as the first Gibbons tennis player to earn National High School Tennis All-American recognition—an honor reserved for only 40 players nationwide each year—and achieved it not once, but twice, during his junior and senior seasons.

A proud member of the Class of 2014, Robert competed on the varsity team all four years, helping lead the Crusaders to four consecutive State Championship titles. In his junior year, the team completed a perfect 26–0 season, earning the number one ranking in the state across all classifications—a testament to both talent and teamwork.

Individually, Robert set a standard few have matched. He completed two undefeated singles seasons and captured the 3A State Singles Championship in both 2013 and 2014. He closed his high school career with 51 consecutive singles victories and more than 100 total wins in singles and doubles. In recognition of his leadership and character, he was named Gibbons Male Athlete of the Year in 2014.

But Robert’s story goes beyond wins and rankings. His dedication in the classroom and on the court made him the top college tennis recruit in North Carolina and the Southeast, earning a national top-ten ranking and opening the door to his next chapter at UNC–Chapel Hill.

At Carolina, Robert continued to rise. He amassed more than 100 career wins, nearly set a program record as a freshman, and led his team in singles victories as a sophomore. A three-time All-American in doubles, he achieved the number one NCAA doubles ranking for three consecutive years—cementing his place among the nation’s elite.

After college, Robert pursued his dream on the ATP Tour, competing professionally across the country and earning over 20 prize-money tournament wins, including a doubles title in California and a semifinal appearance at the Cleveland Challenger. He later carried the same discipline and drive into a career in finance in New York City.

In 2023, Robert came full circle—returning to UNC–Chapel Hill as a member of the men’s tennis coaching staff. Today, as one of Carolina’s most accomplished players of the 2000s, he gives back to the game that shaped him, inspiring young athletes to believe in themselves, push beyond limits, and pursue excellence in every arena of life.

Robert Kelly’s legacy at Cardinal Gibbons is not just measured in championships—but in the standard he set, the lives he continues to influence, and the belief that with faith, effort, and perseverance, anything is possible
