Profile of a Student-Athlete

Overview

  • Mindful of our mission as a Catholic school, Cardinal Gibbons High School student-athletes help fulfill the mission of Jesus Christ and represent the values of faith, service, and leadership.
  • Mindful of our purpose as a college preparatory school, Cardinal Gibbons student-athletes maintain a solid academic profile.
  • Mindful of our many blessings, Cardinal Gibbons student-athletes display a work ethic and care for themselves that maximizes their God-given potential and supports the same in their teammates.
  • We are a Catholic college-preparatory high school. While athletics may be important to our school and culture, they do not supersede our faith or academics.

MISSION

As ambassadors to other schools, the NCHSAA, and the broader community, Cardinal Gibbons student-athletes represent the school, the Diocese, and the Catholic and Christian faith.

Their attitude, behavior, how they treat others, and general mindset should reflect positively on what they represent. This includes the classroom, the school community, the athletic arena, social media, and the general community.

Student-athletes who do not uphold this standard will be subject to limited athletic participation, including athletic probation or dismissal from the team.

Academics

As full members of a college preparatory school, Cardinal Gibbons student-athletes are expected to prioritize academics and maintain strong academic standards.

Minimum Academic Standards

Student-athletes with below a 3.0 quarterly GPA (unweighted) will be placed on academic support. They may fully participate in athletic activities but must have once-weekly, documented meetings with a coaching staff member to review the student-athlete’s grades and academic standing.

Student-athletes with below a 2.50 quarterly GPA (unweighted) will be placed on academic monitoring. They must use their flex period for a monitored study hall and may not miss any class time for athletic activities. Participation is allowed in all other team activities, subject to approval by ALL of the following: the Dean of Students, the Office of College Counseling, the Director of Studies, and the head coach.

Student-athletes with below a 2.0 quarterly GPA (unweighted) are not eligible to try out for or compete on athletic teams at Cardinal Gibbons High School. If this occurs mid-season, the student-athlete is on athletic probation. They may remain on the team but may not participate in any games/competitions and will have to schedule a meeting with the Learning Support Specialist to develop an academic plan.

Culture

As stewards of God's gifts, Cardinal Gibbons student-athletes display a work ethic and care for others consistent with our school's culture.
