Elections
We don't have elections. We have interviews instead. Radical huh? Why?
We had a good Student Council with elections. We didn't want good. We wanted great. Here were some of the problems with the old system.
- traditional elections are nothing like the "real world" of getting a job or leadership
- speeches aren't leadership
- we had only 20 positions available even though our population had tripled.
- speech assemblies weren't transformative and valuable for the classmates
- positional power descriptions were silly. the treasurer never touched money, the secretary didn't take notes, and thank God the President was never shot.
- students didn't want to run "against" someone else. They simply wanted a venue to practice leadership and serve our community
So, we made some changes gradually over time. We changed the format of the election assembly from a panel of teachers and students asking questions, to video taped speeches online, and finally to interviews with 3 students and 2 teachers. The blind survey feedback, other feedback as well as the results have been overwhelmingly good. Here are some of the things we have now.
- we more than doubled the number of positions of student council officers
- we hold interviews
- results: the number of applicants has grown 400 times
- results: huge increase in attendance at meetings and events
- results: an real internship in leadership
Mission/Vision
This year's theme for us is "Ordinary Love." We know that miracles happen with the most ordinary of things, in the most ordinary of places, with the most ordinary people. Love is spectacular and miraculous.
At our first meeting of the year, without any adult's knowledge, we showed up early and exploded with a Pancake Prom Party. Yes, prom dresses and tuxedos. Yes, Pancakes. It was so fun that we called other people to join. People left in cars to pick up others. We even crashed a new teacher meeting and hijacked them and took them to our meeting.
Mission Statement: We are a group of students and educators who embrace an internship in leadership for the growth and development of our student body and community.
