Introduction to Academic Writing
Session Dates: June 20-23 or 27-30
Time: 12:30 PM-4 PM
Age: Rising 9th grade
Tuition: $175
Writers of all ability levels will strengthen their written communication skills within the classroom environment. This hands on class will provide writing tips and techniques for rising 9th graders. Students will take simple sentences to the next level, structure solid paragraphs, and form logical and interesting essays. Students will create and share writing in a collaborative and friendly workshop atmosphere.

Media Camp

This camp is an immersive experience into media and publications. Spend a week working on different areas of media such as social media and broadcast journalism and learn about publication production with newspaper and yearbook! All those enrolled in camp will have a chance to make their own news broadcast show and newspaper. Have the opportunity to learn Adobe software, hear from media professionals, and run our twitter account for the week! Get the edge on all things media with this Gibbons Summer Camp!

Ever wished you could build and control a robot?
During the week students will work with the Lego EV3 mindstorm robots to complete challenges and learn how to program a robot to perform various challenges including exploring the surface of Mars!

Dance Camp 1

Explore the world of Gibbons Dance! This camp will cover a variety of dance styles including jazz, contemporary, improvisation and choreography. Students will also learn perseverance, discipline, leadership skills, teamwork, self-confidence and how to create choreography. Camps may conclude with an informal showing to demonstrate all that they have learned during the week.

Guitar and Bass Camp
Dates: June 20-24

Cardinal Gibbons Guitar and Bass camp is designed for beginner to intermediate players. We will work on playing in a group as well as refining individual technique. We look at many styles of popular music, and explore amps, effects, and different guitars.
Equipment: Students will need to provide their own instruments. If they have not had experience, then Mr. Aull can be contacted for details about how to get an instrument.
Instructor:
Angus Stewart Aull joined the Cardinal Gibbons Music faculty in 2012 and has been working with Gibbons since 2007. In addition to teaching music, Mr. Aull has played all over the country in a wide variety of acts, and currently handles bass and vocal rolls in both 8-Track Minds and Full Moon Pie.
String Orchestra Camp
Dates: June 27-July 1
Times: 9:00-3:00 (Mon-Thurs & drop off begins at 8:30) Friday Concert for families at 1:00
Ages: Rising 6th-9th grade
Tuition: $250
This week long camp focuses on ensemble playing, instrumental technique, instrument maintenance, learning new repertoire and performance practice. Included is multiple coaching sessions, private tutoring and instrument sectionals. Students should expect to play a performance at the end of the week to highlight their progress at the camp. Equipment: Students will need to provide their own instruments. If they have not had experience, then Mr. Hawks can be contacted for details about how to get an instrument.
Instructor:
Andrew Hawks, a successful musician, artist, and educator, has spent the last two decades performing for audiences across two continents and five countries. He holds a Master’s Degree in Double Bass Performance from Michigan State University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Double Bass Performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Percussion Ensemble Camp
Dates: June 27-July 1
Times: 9:00 AM-3:00 PM (drop off begins at 8:30)
Grades: Rising 8th through 12th Grade (Minimum 1 year of playing experience on current instrument)

The camp will allow students to work on their individual musicianship, in addition to enhancing their ensemble performance skills. Students should have at least one year of study on their current instrument. We will study fundamentals, chorales, small group and full group band pieces. Each section will have their own professional instructor for the camp as well!
Camp with conclude with a short performance for parents on the final day of camp at 2:15 pm
Instructor: Mark Cashin is Director of Bands and AP Theory at Cardinal Gibbons. He has a BA in Music Performance and a Master's of Arts in Teaching from UNC-Chapel Hill. He has studied wind ensemble and percussion for over ten years. He has been an Honors Band Clinician for the Franklin and Wilkes Middle School All-County Bands, and has taught with Summer Programs at Cardinal Gibbons for the past four years, tripling enrollment of the summer bands since their inception.
Equipment: Students must provide their own instrument, with exceptions made on a case-by-case basis. Percussionists should bring a pair of SD-1 General Drum Sticks by Vic Firth.

Symphonic Band Camp

Description:
The Cardinal Gibbons Wind Ensemble Camp is for all woodwind, brass and percussion students.. The camp allows students to further their individual musicianship, in addition to enhancing their ensemble performance skills. Students should have three years of proficient study on their current instrument or more. We will study fundamentals, chorales, small group and full group band pieces. Sections will have their own instructor for the week of camp.
Camp with conclude with a short performance for parents on the final day of camp at 2:15 pm
Percussionists should also attend this camp and will be provided a percussion ensemble experience in addition to playing with the full band.

For rising 5th- 9th graders (unless exception noted in description) in the following disciplines: baseball, basketball, cheerleading, field hockey, football, freshman football, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling. All sports camps take place at Cardinal Gibbons.
A copy of any sports/school/camp physical, signed by a physician, needs to be turned in at the time of camp check in. The physical needs to have been completed within 13 months prior to camp (May 20, 2021 for the first week of camps and May 27, 2021 for the second week) There is not a specific form required, but if you need one, you can use the one found here: https://www.cghsnc.org/athletics/tryouts

Baseball
Boys' Baseball
Dates: June 27-30

Age: Rising 5th - 7th grade (Group 1) and Rising 8th-10th grade (Group 2)

This camp will focus on fundamental baseball skills: pitching mentality and mechanics, fielding, hitting, base running and situational baseball. There will be stations to work on all skills to build the complete ballplayer.
Instructor: Jim Liebler is Cardinal Gibbons' varsity baseball coach. Coach Liebler has been coaching at the high school level for the past 27 years at St. Anthony’s H.S. in South Huntington, NY and Cardinal Gibbons H.S. in Raleigh, NC. As a player, he started for 4 years at Division 1 College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. He has been running baseball camps and training individual players in the area for the past 23 years, while serving as the varsity baseball coach at Cardinal Gibbons. He has also coached with the State Games of North Carolina (1999-2003) and worked for USA Baseball as a trials coach helping to form the 14U Team USA group for the summer of 2010. His current record at Gibbons is 353 wins against 220 losses.

Baseball Pitching Academy

This camp will focus on pitching mentality, mechanics, and fielding. This specialized camp is for pitchers who are serious about their future in baseball. This camp is ONLY Mon/Wed and Friday from 8:30 am-11am

This camp will concentrate on the basics of basketball, emphasizing both team and individual skills. Skills include ball handling, shooting, passing, defense, rebounding, post play, offensive sets, team rebounding and court awareness. Each week of camp is structured the same. Campers can attend either session, or both sessions.

Girls' Basketball
Session Dates: June 20-23

This camp will focus on the fundamentals of passing, ball handling, shooting and rebounding, as well as offensive and defensive principles. Skills will be honed through teaching stations and team play in leagues based upon age. Each week of camp is structured the same. Campers can attend either session, or both sessions.
Instructor: Jessica Lowe '99 has coached Cardinal Gibbons' varsity girls' basketball team for 10 seasons. In her time at Gibbons Lowe has coached 5 1000 pt scorers, 2 conference players of the year and numerous all conference selections. Coach Lowe is also Cardinal Gibbons' all-time leading scorer in girls’ basketball (2,121 points). Her #12 jersey was retired following her graduation. Lowe also teaches Honors World and American History.

Cheerleading

During this fun filled week of cheerleading camp we will focus on perfecting your motions, jumps, stunting technique and basic tumbling skills. You will have ample time to work with experienced Gibbons Cheerleaders and coaches to help improve your skills. At the end of the week we will have all of these skills combined into a short routine that you will perform for family and friends. Come on and cheer with us! GO GIBBONS!
Instructor: Jenny Marks has been the cheerleading coach at Gibbons the past 19 years. She is the former two time captain and member of the 2001 National Championship NC State Cheerleading team. While coaching at Gibbons the team has won 8 State Championships, 3 National championships and three Carolina Cups ( the highest honor for any NCSHAA team). Jenny enjoys competing in triathlons with her husband, Taylor, and spending time with her five young children.

Field Hockey
Time: 4:30 PM-8 PM
Age: Rising 5th - 9th grade

Camp emphasis will be on stick skills, field play and positioning. We will cover defensive, offensive, drills along with line attack shooting and corners. There will be a focus on endurance training, body positioning and footwork as well as understanding the rules of the game.
Instructor: Chantal Ayers is an accomplished player and coach with experience at the international, collegiate and high school field hockey levels. Ayers is a native of Avon, CT, (Kingswood- Oxford High School) where she was a standout 3 sport athlete (Field Hockey, Ice Hockey and Lacrosse). In 2015, Chantal was inducted into the Kingswood-Oxford Hall of Fame for all three sports. A 1994 graduate of Holy Cross College (Worcester, MA), Chantal was an All-American in both Field Hockey and Lacrosse. She captained and was named MVP of both teams her junior and senior years. Named Field Hockey Patriot League Player of the year her senior year.

Football

This camp focuses on the fundamentals of football and includes skill development training for all positions. In the camp experience players will learn specific skills for their particular position, blocking and tackling fundamentals, defensive pass rush, pass coverage, proper throwing mechanics, pass receiving and running skills as well as special teams drills for long snappers, punters and kickers. We will have fun learning the "ins and outs" of the game and will provide organized competition at the end of each morning session.

Coach Wright is a 21-year coaching veteran, entering his 17th season as a high school head coach. He assumed the reins of Cardinal Gibbons' football program in 2011. During Coach Wright’s time at Gibbons his varsity teams have won six conference titles, including three undefeated regular seasons, and made two NCHSAA 4A state championship game appearances. The Crusaders have produced 125 all-conference players, 7 conference players of the year, 14 all-state selections, and have sent 58 players on to play NCAA football over the past 11 years. Coach Wright is a six-time Conference Coach of the Year and Cardinal Gibbons’ all-time winningest coach.

Freshman Football Camp

This camp provides an opportunity for incoming 9th graders to work closely with the CGHS Football staff and understand the expectations of playing at Cardinal Gibbons. This experience serves as a preview of what practice is like and includes instruction on the philosophy and systems Cardinal Gibbons High School uses during the season. Position specific drill work, 7 on 7 pass skeleton drills, and offensive/defensive team sessions will be included, giving all participants a great preview of what the Crusader football experience is like.

Lacrosse

This camp will focus on the basics of lacrosse, including passing and catching, stick protection, ground ball techniques, shooting and defensive positioning.
Instructor: Coach Gordon Galloway will be the main instructor of the camp. Gibbons Lacrosse won back to back State Titles in 2015 and 2016, 2019 and 2021, making a Regional appearance in 2017.

Girls' Lacrosse

Camp emphasis will focus on teaching the fundamentals of lacrosse through small station work. The skills we will focus on will include basic stick work, shooting, offense movement through small sided play and defensive positioning as well as game like scrimmages!
Instructor: Patricia Alexander was named Head Coach at Cardinal Gibbons in November of 2014. She led the Lady Crusaders to the State Championship game in all four years she has been at Gibbons with her first season falling short in double overtime. She won the next three years 2016, 2017 and 2018 State Championships! Alexander has played an instrumental role in the growth of club and high school girls’ lacrosse in the Triangle region over the past decade. Alexander currently coaches with Carolina Fever, helping Fever grow into a leading club in the Southeast. She is coaching the Under Armour All American Highlight team for a second year in a row ( 2017 & 2028). At the high school level, Coach Alexander has amassed a 79-8 record at Gibbons and 43-22 record at Needham Broughton. She has a 122-30 overall record.
A 1994 graduate from Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland, Alexander was a four year starter on defense under renowned coach Diane Geppi Aikens. Alexander earned captain and MVP honors both her Junior and Senior years. As a senior she was also named to All-American and All-Maryland teams after leading her team to a final four appearance in College Park, MD.

Soccer

This camp is for middle school players that would like to get an additional week of training to work on becoming a better soccer player. The camp is designed to work with players on “ball mastery” and becoming a more confident player with the ball at their feet. The emphasis will be individual ball work to improve foot skills and then those skills will be put to practice in small game scenarios.

This camp is for rising freshman players that would like to get ready for the upcoming fall season. The camp is designed to work with players on “ball mastery” and becoming a more confident player with the ball at their feet for the first half of the day. The second half will be training to get ready for the expectations and demands on HS soccer and what to expect in the fall. Camp is open to all rising 9th graders, even if not attending Gibbons to help them get ready for their schools tryouts as well. The camp is Monday-Thursday from 5:30pm-8pm.

Instructor: Tim Healy is Cardinal Gibbons' varsity boys' soccer coach. Healy, a mathematics instructor at the school, led the program to NCHSAA 2A state championships in 2006 & 2008, 3A State Championship titles in 2010 ,2011, 2014 and 2017, 2020-21 4A State Champions. In addition to the 7 State Championships, Coach Healy has led the Crusaders to 9 Regional Championships and 12 Conference Championships. Coach Healy was Coerver North Carolina Director from 2007-2016, currently helping Coerver Premier. He played college soccer at Xavier University in Ohio. Coach Healy also has coached both boys and girls for CASL and currently assists the girls soccer program in the spring

Instructor: Brian Morgan is the Head Coach for the Women's Program. Coach Morgan comes to Gibbons from the D.C. area where he was the Coaching Director with Coerver Coaching. Morgan also served as the Women's Head Coach at Severna Park High School in Annapolis from 2016-2018 leading the team to County and Regional Championships in 2018 and earning Coach of the Year in both 2017 and 2018.
Coach Morgan is managing partner with Coerver Premier, the Raleigh branch of Coerver where he is dedicated to developing skilled, confident and creative players while teaching good sportsmanship and respect for all.
Softball

Speed, strength, and agility training camps are perfect for dedicated athletes preparing for an upcoming sports season. This program empowers athletes to take their game to the next level, and ensures that they will be ready to overcome any challenges thrown their way. Every athlete will be pushed and challenged, both physically and mentally, to ensure that they are tapping into their maximum potential with each session. This sports training camp only allows up to 36 participants. Athletes will be pushed on an individual basis to achieve their maximum potential with each intense session. This specialty camp will ensure that athletes are ready to overcome any challenge that may be thrown their way during the next sports season.
Instructor: The Gibbons Speed, Strength, and Agility Camp will be staffed by one or more Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (CSCS), depending on the total number of campers and the age/gender of our participants.

Tennis

This camp will focus on fundamental tennis skills, including development of all strokes (forehand, backhand, etc.), serving, volleying, footwork, and conditioning.
Instructor: Andrew Tuttle joined the Cardinal Gibbons faculty in the fall of 2008 as a mathematics instructor and varsity boys'/girls' tennis coach. Tuttle coached the 2009 boys' squad to the school's fourth consecutive NCHSAA 2A dual-team state title, and an inaugural 3A championship in 2011. The 2011 girls' team earned the school's first 3A state championship.

This camp will stress the fundamentals of volleyball, with special emphasis on serving and passing. All basic skills will be taught as well team offense and team defense.
Instructor: Logan Barber enters his twelfth season as Cardinal Gibbons' varsity volleyball coach. In Coach Barber's first six seasons (2010 - 2016), Cardinal Gibbons won six consecutive NCHSAA 3A/4A state championships. Coach Barber most recently won the 2020-2021 4A State Championship!

Wrestling

This an introductory program for beginning wrestlers ages 8 – 14. The focus will be on the fundamental techniques of youth wrestling with skills aimed to develop a well rounded wrestler from the 3 basic positions
Instructor: Gibbons Varsity Wrestling Coach, Jonathan Armfield. Coach Armfield is a 2-time nominee for the Cary Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year Award (2009, 2013), as well as a 2011 nominee for the Cary Teacher Leadership Award. He has won a conference title with Panther Creek High School and has coached multiple state placers and rising collegiate wrestlers. Coach Armfield earned a BS degree in Technology Education from North Carolina State University (’07) and also served in the United States Marine Corps prior to teaching.

Our Musical Theatre Showcase camp immerses students in elements of musical theatre performance: voice, movement and acting. Our artistic team will select a series of musical theatre songs designed to highlight both the individual and collective talents of all our campers. Our goal is to develop the necessary skills and confidence required to seize both a moment in the spotlight along with the selflessness and teamwork required to be a successful supporting player in an ensemble. The Musical Theatre Showcase camp culminates with a performance showcase of material developed over the course of camp, with full tech and musical support.

Camp Crusader
We’re excited to offer an EXCITING OVERNIGHT summer camp program this year.
Cardinal Gibbons Short Journey Retreat Center July 10-14
Camp Crusader is a 4 night/5 day summer camp adventure for children in grades 4-8 in Smithfield, North Carolina at the newly renovated Cardinal Gibbons Short Journey Retreat Center. During this week campers will have the chance to meet new people, experience a low ropes course, archery, arts and crafts, drama, field sports, and deepen their faith.
Camp will begin at Gibbons on Sunday, students will travel by bus to Short Journey. On Thursday families will meet at Short Journey at 4:30 for a family cookout and awards ceremony, which will conclude by 6:00 PM.
Camp Crusader will be overseen by Ms. Sarah Kuszaj ‘95, Ms. Sarah Tennant and Mr. Tim Yelenic. They will put together a staff of Cardinal Gibbons juniors and seniors as well as alumni to help bring Camp Crusader to life.
Meals and snacks will be provided each day.
Campers will also have the chance to dress for each fun day of Camp Crusader.
