Western Europe

One of the most anticipated events of the year at Gibbons is the trip to Western Europe. On the trip, students will visit some of the most well-known cities in Europe, such as Paris, Berlin, Munich, London and the Normandy region, depending on the year. In these cities, students and teachers see landmarks such as Stonehenge, Buckingham Palace, the Berlin Wall, the Eiffel Tower and the English Channel.

One of the highlights of the trip was paying respect to 9,387 fallen soldiers and 1,557 missing in action at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial. The Remembrance Project, which began in 2013, was not only applauded by the Gibbons community but also Governor Pat McCrory, who donated a North Carolina state flag and issued a proclamation commending the project, and President Barack Obama, who sent a letter wishing the students and teachers the best on their trip.
 

Sophomore Armando Santana's comments about the trip to the memorial captures the true essence, "When I was in Normandy, I felt touched to be there. Seeing the graves of all the soldiers that fought in Omaha Beach... I nearly cried. It was probably the most beautiful thing I had seen in my life." Landmark Staff Writer
