Golfing for Gibbons

"We hope this annual event is part of each volunteer's and each player's #joyfuljourney, and serves as an opportunity to celebrate Gibbons' athletic program," said Gibbons parent volunteer Copie Cane, who is chairing the tournament. "As Mr. Schuler (Athletic Director Todd Schuler) shared with families this summer, 'athletics serves as a ministry for our student-athletes to explore and live their faith, engage in leadership, and be part of something bigger than themselves.'"

It is a long-held tradition at Cardinal Gibbons High School. Each October, Gibbons golfers join in fellowship at the links to enjoy time together playing a favored sport, and to help support the school.

The tradition continues October 2. That's when the annual Crusader Classic Golf Tournament will take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary. As in years past, proceeds from the tournament, sponsored by the Cardinal Gibbons Family Association (CGFA), will benefit Cardinal Gibbons' mission-driven athletics program.

"The tournament is a very popular CGFA event each year that provides a great way for parents, alumni, and friends of Gibbons to enjoy a full day of golf and fellowship," said Kerry Mann, Director of Parent Engagement. "It is a fun way to engage and support Gibbons Athletics."

Proceeds from last year's tournament helped ensure that mission-driven athletic programs and experiences were available to nearly 900 student-athletes at Cardinal Gibbons for the 2016-2017 academic year.  Those programs and experiences ranged from continued growth of athletic retreats and service initiatives to two 4A State Championships: Women's Cross Country & Women's Lacrosse, and the launch of the Legacy Project video series.

The golf tournament, which traditionally attracts a full roster of 144 golfers, goes a long way in helping to continue those programs and experiences for the 2017-2018 academic year. To that end, this year's tournament already has something distinct to boast about – two hole in one sponsors.  They are Michael Jordan Nissan and Crown Honda of Southpoint.

Of participating in his second consecutive tournament this year, Gibbons alumnus Nick Vrscak '08, sales consultant at Michael Jordan Nissan, said, "I want to play in the tournament not only to play with old friends and to win, but to give back and be a part of the transformation Gibbons has gone through since I was there."

Playing as alum, he noted, adds something special to the tournament because, "Cardinal Gibbons has done so much for me academically as well as personally since some of my best memories and friends all come from this place."

To be sure, the Gibbons spirit will be present throughout the golf tournament, evidenced by the more than 50 parent volunteers who will be on hand to greet attendees. In addition, members of Gibbons Men's and Women's Golf teams will be at the tournament assisting at the putting green and 18th hole, and Gibbons coaches will be tooling around the course in the beverage carts.

"We hope this annual event is part of each volunteer's and each player's #joyfuljourney, and serves as an opportunity to celebrate Gibbons' athletic program," said Gibbons parent volunteer Copie Cane, who is chairing the tournament. "As Mr. Schuler (Athletic Director Todd Schuler ) shared with families this summer, 'athletics serves as a ministry for our student-athletes to explore and live their faith, engage in leadership, and be part of something bigger than themselves.'"
