Beginning Their Outreach Journey
Rachelle Garbarine

Faith and Leadership are the two tenets that bookend our school’s mission statement, but the story in between is all about the third principle -our service to others. And the newest members of our Gibbons family, the Class of 2022, recently took the first steps on their journey of service and outreach.

Freshman Outreach

Starting last Wednesday a group of freshmen visited a local child development center that caters to low-income families and engaged with the children.Group after group of ninth graders will follow them every Wednesday from 9 AM to noon during the school year to one of three such centers to play games with the children, take them to the playground, and read to them, among other activities.

“Jesus tells us in the Gospel that ‘whoever welcomes such a child in my name welcomes me,’” said Gary Meyerl ’82, Director of Outreach Ministry. “How appropriate that the newest members of our Gibbons community are invited to begin their outreach journey by serving children.”

“I wish everyone could witness the joy on the children’s faces when our students walk into the room,” explained Director of Outreach Gary Meyerl '82.

The freshmen embraced the opportunity to help children, and to share and receive joy. Review the list below of students who visited the center last Wednesday.

Freshman Outreach

“I enjoyed working with the kids. I played basketball and tic-tac-toe with them and we had a blast,” said Patrick Downes ’22. “I wish I could go back and help again.”

Natalie Gifford ’22 said, “seeing how grateful the children were made me feel humble.”

What lessons did they learn? For Patrick it was “that not everyone … has all the blessings I do, but … people still find happiness in such little things.”

Natalie added that “it opened my eyes to seeing another side of life that I am not used to seeing.”

The feeling of gratitude is mutual, said Gary Meyerl. “I wish everyone could witness the joy on the children’s faces when our students walk into the room,” he added.
