Catholic Schools Week with Darsey Williams

Editor's Note - Catholic Schools Week (Jan. 28 - Feb. 3) continues today and so does our special series that spotlights the amazing educators at Gibbons and what they learned from their equally-amazing students. The stories they share in their first-person accounts underscore that Catholic schools inspire students and educators alike to learn, serve, lead, and succeed, which is the theme of this year's celebration. Each day of Catholic Schools Week we will post one essay; and on this third day of the celebration Business Department Chair Darsey Williams shares her story. Darsey has taught at Gibbons for 15  years. She currently teaches Technology Skills, and Marketing/Finance Honors, and is a moderator of Yearbook and iCube (Innovative Crusaders Understanding Business & Entrepreneurship). She is pictured above with some of her students.

By nature, I see the bright side of life. I have always celebrated joyful occasions, but it wasn't until I began teaching at Cardinal Gibbons that I truly experienced joy through the hearts of my students. Connecting with our students each day academically and emotionally has allowed me to know their minds and their hearts to better understand life and high school as they experience it.

My life at Cardinal Gibbons is especially joyful being with students every day to celebrate their joys. They include experiencing milestones or firsts, understanding complex issues with an "Oh, I See" moment, enjoying pop culture-related lunch conversations, understanding their triumphs and even their setbacks on and off the playing field, or discovering new cities on school-sponsored trips or retreats.

I feel happy, inspired, and blessed to be a part of my students' lives. It is a privilege and a blessing to support and celebrate them every day at Cardinal Gibbons for they have taught me not only the true meaning of joy, but also of resilience and compassion.
