The Principal Search Committee met on March 27, 2019, to interview candidates for the position of Interim Principal for the 2019-2020 academic year and to choose the search firm that will assist us with the selection of the next Principal for Cardinal Gibbons High School.
The committee interviewed two candidates: one external and one internal. The Search Committee recommended to the Board of Trustees, who in turn recommended to Bishop Zarama, the appointment of Mrs. Nancy Barkan as the Interim Principal effective July 1, 2019. Bishop Zarama has accepted that recommendation.
Mrs. Barkan began as an educator at Cardinal Gibbons in 2003 and has served as Assistant Principal for Instruction since 2007. Mrs. Barkan formerly taught English at Southeast Raleigh High School, Stockbridge High School in Stockbridge, GA, and St. Mary’s High School in Jersey City, NJ. Mrs. Barkan holds a BA in English/Secondary Education from Providence College and an MSA in Educational Leadership from UNC-Chapel Hill. In her role as Assistant Principal.
Mrs. Barkan is responsible for the supervision of all Gibbons classroom educators and Academic Council, working closely with course curriculum and scheduling, campus technology, professional development, and college counseling.
Reflecting on her appointment as Interim Principal.Mrs. Barkan stated, “When I joined the Cardinal Gibbons community in 2003, I felt as if I had come home. Working as a classroom educator and then administrator, I have been a part of something special – collaborating and leading our community to fulfill our mission - embracing the mission of Jesus Christ: forming men and women in faith, service, and leadership. I look forward to the opportunity to serve our community in this new role and preparing us for the next phase of the legacy that is Cardinal Gibbons High School.”
Mrs. Barkan will be working with Mr. Curtis in order to plan for a smooth transition, and she will also be working with Assistant Principals, Mike Rogosich and Mike Curatolo, and our educators in planning for the coming school year.
The Search Committee has chosen the firm of Carney, Sandoe, and Associates to assist with the recruitment of the next principal . Carney Sandoe is known in their field for bringing clients the very best candidates for their needs who are vetted in faith and passionate about Catholic mission and identity. The next step in the search process will be an onsite visit by Mr. Bob Regan from Carney Sandoe where he will meet with the Principal Search Committee in order to formally begin the search process and fully understand the skills and qualities that we seek in the next leader of Cardinal Gibbons. The full search process will involve input from all of our stakeholders: students, parents, educators, alumni, and benefactors. The next update will include a full timeline of the search process.
Cardinal Gibbons is in an excellent position as one of the premier Catholic High Schools in our country. We have full confidence in Mrs. Barkan, the Assistant Principals, and our educators in this time of transition to maintain a high level of academic integrity, Catholic identity, and a continued living of our mission to form men and women in faith, service, and leadership in church and community.
