Principal's Message - Coronavirus Update School Closing

March 13, 2020

Dear Gibbons Families,

We are thankful for your continued trust and patience as we navigate through this challenging time. As you are aware, the coronavirus (COVID-19) is impacting the lives of many people around the world and close to home. In recent days Gov. Cooper issued a State of Emergency for North Carolina, Wake County Public Schools suspended all field trips, and local colleges and universities, like Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill, have transitioned to online classes. While this rapidly-evolving situation has been stressful to many on our campus, we are committed to protecting the health and well-being of our students, educators, and families.

After careful deliberation, and with the approval of Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama, we have made the proactive decision to close our campus to students for the period beginning Tuesday, March 17, 2020, with plans to return on Monday, March 30, 2020. Please be assured that there are NO confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our school community. Rather, we made this difficult decision out of an abundance of caution and to encourage greater social distancing and mitigate the spread of the virus.

Beginning on Tuesday, March 17, we will transition to our distance learning scenario to ensure that students achieve their academic goals. (Please review the distance learning schedule for more information.) We will continue to monitor and evaluate the most current recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local health officials and, if warranted, may decide to extend this period of distance learning if necessary.

Rest assured that our educators and technology team have been working diligently to prepare to offer classes remotely to students. They will be using a variety of tech tools, including Zoom, to support student learning.

At the same time we have postponed or canceled the following:

  • Postponed:
    • Junior/Senior Prom
    • All Gibbons athletics events postponed through April 6
    • All spring fine arts events
  • Canceled:
    • Family Day of Service
    • All field trips, outreach and retreats activities
      SAT Day on March 25
    • All use of Gibbons Athletics facilities by outside groups

We hope to make our decision regarding resuming classes by March 30. Recognizing that this campus closure is unanticipated for our community, we are asking students TODAY to gather any resources they will need, as well as check-in with our STARs tech support, and meet with educators to ask questions, and make preparations for remote learning. Please know that beginning on Tuesday, March 17, the campus will be closed to all students and families until a decision is finalized to officially re-open on March 30.

While our school thrives on engaging learning experiences and community involvement, we recognize that these preventative measures may result in considerable strain for our families. This is not the Gibbons experience we hoped for you this semester. As always, the safety and health of our students, educators, and families are our top priority. Like so many other communities, our hope is that we will return to normalcy as soon as possible.

As we move forward and evaluate our plans as new information is available, we will continue to communicate via emails to parents and students and social media. Please continue to check our dedicated coronavirus web page frequently for the most up-to-date information. There are also resources available in the planning section.

In our school’s 110-year history, we have faced many challenges, and at every step, Gibbons has proven to be resilient. And it will be again as we turn to the power of our Catholic faith to guide us through this uncertain time.

Please continue to keep those affected by this situation in your prayers.

Also, know that we are grateful to partner with you and your family on this educational journey.

Nancy A. Barkan
