It has been an exciting and joy-filled – albeit different – start to the 2020-2021 school year. The past two weeks, to be sure, also have been a tremendous reminder of the strength and resilience of our Gibbons community.
So, just in case you missed something, we are providing this update that not only provides a look back on these initial weeks of school but also to what’s ahead so you can stay informed and engaged.
We loved seeing our students again – both in-person and via Zoom – during their welcome days, and in their classes. And we enjoyed touching base with parents at our first-ever remote Back to School Night.
We are sure to enjoy more inspiring experiences in the months ahead as our educators and students embrace new and innovative ways to teach and learn. And at the same time, we will remain focused on ensuring that through our mission of faith, service, and leadership all are transformed.

For students looking for additional help in math, former Gibbons Math Educator Shari Frederick, is offering virtual tutoring this year. She will offer individual and small group tutoring sessions. Each session is up to one hour and will be offered on Zoom. Sessions will be available during a student’s flex course or between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. or 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Monday-Friday. Parents/Guardians contact Mrs. Frederick at firstname.lastname@example.org for a tutoring request form.
Due to COVID restrictions and to provide a safe and socially distance testing environment, Cardinal Gibbons can only administer the PSAT test to grade 10 and 11 students on October 14. Current freshmen will have the opportunity to take the PSAT starting in the 2021-2022 school year. Please contact Jeanette Hadsell, Director of College Counseling at email@example.com with questions.
Finally, read what some students and educators had to say about the start of school in our COVID-19 reality in this Gibbons news story post.
We continue to thoughtfully plan for ways to safely keep our students engaged and connected socially and spiritually during this challenging time. Mindful of that:
Due to overwhelming demand, registration for the nine one-day Kairos retreats for our senior students has closed. The same is true for the four freshman retreats. However, there will be a few spots for seniors released in the next week and additional dates for freshman will be added. Please listen for announcements in advisory and theology class and check on Twitter.
Meanwhile, registration for sophomore and junior retreats are open! For details and to register, visit the Retreats web page.
Looking ahead, there will be Community Days for each grade to bring an entire class together at one time to foster a greater sense of community. The first of these days is September 16 for seniors who, as now planned, will be treated to Mass, a movie, and more. The other days are October 7 for freshmen, October 28 for sophomores, and November 11 for juniors. Stay tuned for more details about these days.
Juniors should also keep November 12 open for Junior Mass. All plans and updates will be posted to the Junior Mass web page.
Finally, a reminder that this week, starting Tuesday, September 1, is Yearbook Picture Days for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. Students on-campus will have their pictures taken during their Theology classes. We ask students learning remotely to come to Gibbons, 7-7:30 a.m. on any day to have their photo taken. See the Yearbook Picture Day Post for details.
You weren’t able to attend the recent Back to School Night? No worries, you can still watch the presentation via this link to YouTube.
Our parent leaders also are working to develop new, creative ways for our families to come together in community. Among them is offering parent faith formation sessions throughout the year. In the first session Gibbons Theology Educator Mark DeLaRosa will examine our Sacred Scriptures in pursuit of the question of suffering in our world. The session will be offered on four Tuesdays - September 1, 8, 15, and 22 via Zoom from 7 - 8 p.m. Visit the Parent Experience page to register for the sessions.
Everyone knows that photos are worth a thousand words so don’t forget to set up your account in Vidigami, our school’s official photo-sharing site. See the post about how to set up your account in Vidigami.
