Introduction to Academic Writing

Session 1 Dates: June 24-27 (Mon-Thurs)
Time: 8 AM-11:30 AM 
Age: Rising 9th grade 
Tuition: $160

Writers of all ability levels will strengthen their written communication skills within the classroom environment. This hands on class will provide writing tips and techniques for rising 9th graders. Students will take simple sentences to the next level, structure solid paragraphs, and form logical and interesting essays. Students will create and share writing in a collaborative and friendly workshop atmosphere.

Media Camp

Session Dates: July 8-11 (Mon-Thurs)

This camp is an immersive experience into media and publications.  Spend a week working on different areas of media such as social media and broadcast journalism and learn about publication production with newspaper and yearbook!  All those enrolled in camp will have a chance to make their own news broadcast show and newspaper.  Have the opportunity to learn Adobe software, hear from media professionals, and run our twitter account for the week!  Get the edge on all things media with this Gibbons Summer Camp!

Robotics

Age: Rising 5th - 9th grade (each session limited to 15 students)

Ever wished you could build and control a robot? Envious of BB8 and other droids in the Star Wars movies? Then come explore the world of robots and Legos! Students will design, build and code a robot while completing various challenges. EV3 Lego Mindstorm kits will be used to complete the fun activities throughout the week.

Dance Camps

Explore the world of Gibbons Dance! These dance camps, which takes place at Cardinal Gibbons, will cover many dance styles including jazz, contemporary, ballet, improv, musical theater, and choreography. Students will also learn self-discipline, leadership skills, teamwork, how to create choreography, and develop more self-confidence. Camps will conclude with an informal showing to demonstrate all that they have learned during the week.

Dance Camp 1

Instructor: Elizabeth Stone

 

Elizabeth Stone is a Cardinal Gibbons alum and a student at NC State University majoring in Communication Media with a minor in Dance. Elizabeth has competed nationally in dance, and taught summer dance camps and is very active in the dance industry. She was a member of the 2017- 2018 NC State Dance Team. Elizabeth began her dance training at the age of four at Cary Ballet Conservatory, where she trained in classical ballet, pointe and jazz, and was a member of the senior Jazz and Ballet companies. She later continued her dance training at North Carolina Dance Institute in contemporary, ballet, and jazz, with summer training at the American Dance Festival, Duke University. As a student at Cardinal Gibbons High School, Elizabeth was actively involved in the Honors Dance Program all 4 years, and choreographed a piece for her Dance V class for the spring concert. She was co-president and founder of the Studio II Dance club and a member of the Cardinal Gibbons High School Dance Team, and captain her senior year. Elizabeth continues to cherish the great memories made with the Gibbons dance program and her wonderful teacher Ms. Owens, and is excited to share them with you in camp this summer!

Bass Camp

Dates: June 17-21
Time: 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Age: Rising 5th - 12th grade
Tuition: $250

The Cardinal Gibbons Bass camp will focus on playing fundamentals and a wide array of concepts for the instrument. Bass students will learn proper technique and reading skills, including reading notes on electric bass and may also work on upright bass basics.

Equipment: Electric bass students will need to supply their own electric bass and amp. Bass Students will have the option getting some limited experience on upright bass.

Camp with conclude with a short performance for parents on the final day, along with the symphonic band camp performers.

Instructors: Mr. Stewart Aull is a member of the Cardinal Gibbons’ Music Faculty. In addition to working with bass players, he also teaches guitar, runs the pit orchestra for the summer and semester musicals, and is the sound tech. When not teaching at CGHS, he freelances as a musician and sound man, and teaches privately at Harry’s Guitar Shop.

Chorus Camp

 

Dates: June 10 - 14, 2019
Time: 8:30 a.m.– 5:00 p.m.
Age: Rising 5th – rising 8th grade

Do you like to sing? Join us this summer in our Cardinal Gibbons Chorus Summer Camp! As a chorus camper, you will learn and have lots of fun while singing a variety of outstanding music, receiving instruction in voice and musicianship, along with participating in musical games designed to develop rhythm and music reading. This week-long program will culminate with a family concert at the end of the week to showcase the music we have learned.

Instructor: Mrs. Martha Zaldivar is the Choral Director at Cardinal Gibbons. She has a BBA in Business Administration and a BA in Music Performance/Music Education.  She has studied voice for over 20 years.

 

Guitar Camp

 

Dates: June 17-21
Time: 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Age: Rising 5th - 12th grade
Tuition: $250

The Cardinal Gibbons Guitar camp will focus on the fundamentals of playing guitar, as well as working with a group. Guitar students will learn about the basics of playing and reading music, lead sheets and more.

Equipment: Students need to provide their own guitar, guitar picks, and amp (if using electric).

Camp will conclude with a short performance for parents on the final day.

Percussion Camp

Dates: Camp 1: July 15 - 19 or Camp 2: July 22 - 26
Time: 9 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Age: Rising 5th - 12th grade

These camps strive to make learning percussion fun. While they will focus on the fundamentals of playing percussion, they also will be customized for more advanced students. In addition, students will have the opportunity to play snare drum, mallets (marimba, vibraphone, xylophone and more), drum set, hand drums, and timpani. They will also perform with a percussion ensemble and drum line. The camp is unique in the it goes into extensive detail of both technical and musical concepts in percussion. The camp will conclude with a Percussion Ensemble Performance by the young percussionist on the final day of camp.

Camp 1 Percussion with Band Option:  Advanced students who would also like an additional experience can perform percussion parts with the Symphonic Band Camp. This allows percussionists' the experience of playing percussion-specific music, but the experience of also performing in collaboration with woodwind and brass musicians from our Symphonic Band Camp at no additional charge. For those students interested, please email Mr. Hal Sargent and plan on staying from 3 - 4 p.m. each afternoon.

Instructor: Mr. Hal Sargent is director of percussion at Cardinal Gibbons. He has a BA in music from UNC-Pembroke and a MA in Music/Percussion Performance from UNC-Greensboro. He has studied percussion for over 38 years and taught for over 25 years.

Equipment Recommended: A pair of SD-1 Generals by Vic Firth. To purchase a pair the first day of camp, please email Mr. Hal Sargent or call him at 919-834-1625, x422.

Strings Camp

String Ensemble Camp

Dates: June 24-28
Times: 9:00 a.m-2:00 p.m.
Ages: Rising 1st-5th grade
Tuition: $250

This week long camp focuses on learning rhythms, instrument technique, ensemble playing, performance practice and note reading.  Included is multiple coaching sessions, private tutoring and instrument sectionals.  Students will play a performance at the end of the week to highlight their progress at the camp.  Contact ahawks@cghsnc.org for any questions!

Instructor:

Andrew Hawks, a successful musician, artist, and educator, has spent the last two decades performing for audiences across two continents and five countries.  He holds a Master’s Degree in Double Bass Performance from Michigan State University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Double Bass Performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Symphonic Band Camp

Dates: July 15 - 19
Times: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Daily
Grades: Rising 6th through 9th Grade (Minimum 1 year of playing experience on current instrument)
Tuition: $250

The Cardinal Gibbons Symphonic Band Camp is for woodwind, brass and percussion students. The camp will allow students to work on their individual musicianship, in addition to enhancing their ensemble performance skills. Students should have at least one year of study on their current instrument. We will study fundamentals, chorales, small group and full group band pieces. Each section will have their own professional instructor for the camp as well!

Camp with conclude with a short performance for parents on the final day of camp at 3:15 pm

Percussionists are encouraged to attend this camp, in addition to attending the Percussion Camp offered by Mr. Hal Sargent. Both camps provide unique and meaningful experiences for percussion students

Instructor: Mark Cashin is Director of Bands and AP Theory at Cardinal Gibbons. He has a BA in Music Performance and a Master's of Arts in Teaching from UNC-Chapel Hill. He has studied wind ensemble and percussion for over ten years. He has been an Honors Band Clinician for the Franklin and Wilkes Middle School All-County Bands, and has taught with Summer Programs at Cardinal Gibbons for the past four years, tripling enrollment of the summer bands since their inception.

Equipment: Students must provide their own instrument, with exceptions made on a case-by-case basis. Percussionists should bring a pair of SD-1 General Drum Sticks by Vic Firth.

Introductions Musical Theater Camp (Rising 1st-5th)

Our Introductions Summer Spotlight camp endeavors to introduce young students to musical theater and to encourage, foster and develop an interest and basic skill set in performing musical theater. Students will work on dancing, singing, and acting, and participate in theater games aimed at developing their creativity and collaborating with others. The Introductions camp culminates in a costumed production in the CGHS Studio Theater.

Junior Conservatory Musical Theater Camp (Rising 6th-8th)

The Junior Conservatory Musical Theater Camp endeavors to continue developing and challenging middle school students' skills and passion for performing musical theater. Students will work on more advanced dancing, singing, and acting techniques, and participate in theater games and exercises aimed at developing their creativity, problem solving, and collaborating with others. The Junior Conservatory culminates in a fully realized production in the CGHS Mainstage Theater.

Our Musical Theater Conservatory immerses students in all aspects of musical theater production in a rewarding and challenging environment that promotes community, ensemble-building, and fun. Students will participate in acting and dance breakout sessions each morning; afternoons will consist of  rehearsals for a fully realized production of James and the Giant Peach

The Musical Theater Conservatory culminates in three performances in the CGHS Studio Theater.

Sports Camps

Sports Camps

 

For rising 5th- 9th graders (unless exception noted in description) in the following disciplines: baseball, basketball, cheerleading, field hockey, football, freshman football, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling. All sports camps take place at Cardinal Gibbons.

A copy of any sports/school/camp physical, signed by a physician, needs to be turned in only at the time of camp check in. The physical needs to have been completed within the last 13 months prior to camp (July 24, 2018 for June camps and August 8, 2018 for the July Camps)

Baseball

Boys' Baseball

Dates: July 8-11
Time: 8 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Age: Rising 5th - 9th grade
Tuition: $160

This camp will focus on fundamental baseball skills: pitching mentality and mechanics, fielding, hitting, base running and situational baseball. There will be stations to work on all skills to build the complete ballplayer.

Instructor: Jim Liebler is Cardinal Gibbons' varsity baseball coach. Coach Liebler has been coaching at the high school level for the past 23 years at St. Anthony’s H.S. in South Huntington, NY and Cardinal Gibbons H.S. in Raleigh, NC. As a player, he started for 4 years at Division 1 College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. He has been running baseball camps and training individual players in the area for the past 19 years, while serving as the varsity baseball coach at Cardinal Gibbons. He has also coached with the State Games of North Carolina (1999-2003) and worked for USA Baseball as a trials coach helping to form the 14U Team USA group for the summer of 2010. His current record at Gibbons is 299 wins against 200 losses.

Equipment required: baseball glove, hat, bat, pants, cleats, sneakers.

Baseball Pitching Academy

Dates: June 24-28 (Mon, Wed and Fri)

Age: Rising 2nd - 12th grade

This camp will focus on pitching mentality, mechanics, and fielding. This specialized camp is for pitchers who are serious about their future in baseball.  This camp is ONLY Mon/Wed and Friday from 9am-11am

This camp will concentrate on the basics of basketball, emphasizing both team and individual skills. Skills include ball handling, shooting, passing, defense, rebounding, post play, offensive sets, team rebounding and court awareness. Each week of camp is structured the same. Campers can attend either session, or both sessions.

Instructor: Coach Ryan has over twenty years of coaching experience. He coached at the Division I college level at several universities including eight years at Associate Head Coach at Middle Tennessee State. In addition, he was the assistant director of Prep Stars basketball camp in Charlotte and director of Sunshine Stars basketball camp in Tampa, Florida. He teaches Honors English at Gibbons.

Girls' Basketball

 

Session Dates: July 8-11 (Mon-Thur)
Time: 8 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 
Age: Rising 5th - 9th grade

This camp will focus on the fundamentals of passing, ball handling, shooting and rebounding, as well as offensive and defensive principles. Skills will be honed through teaching stations and team play in leagues based upon age. Each week of camp is structured the same. Campers can attend either session, or both sessions.

Instructor: Jessica Lowe '99 has coached Cardinal Gibbons' varsity girls' basketball team for 10 seasons. In her time at Gibbons Lowe has coached 5 1000 pt scorers, 2 conference players of the year and numerous all conference selections. Coach Lowe is also Cardinal Gibbons' all-time leading scorer in girls’ basketball (2,121 points). Her #12 jersey was retired following her graduation. Lowe also teaches Honors World and American History.

Cheerleading

Dates: June 24-27  (Mon-Thur)
Time: 5 - 8:30 p.m.
Age: Rising 5th - 9th grade
Tuition: $160

 

During this fun filled week of cheerleading camp we will focus on perfecting your motions, jumps, stunting technique and basic tumbling skills. You will have ample time to work with experienced Gibbons Cheerleaders and coaches to help improve your skills. At the end of the week we will have all of these skills combined into a short routine that you will perform for family and friends. Come on and cheer with us! GO GIBBONS!

 

Instructor: Jenny Marks has been the cheerleading coach at Gibbons the past 19 years. She is the former two time captain and member of the 2001 National Championship NC State Cheerleading team. While coaching at Gibbons the team has won 8 State Championships, 3 National championships and three Carolina Cups ( the highest honor for any NCSHAA team). Jenny enjoys competing in triathlons with her husband, Taylor, and spending time with her five young children.

Field Hockey

Date: June 24-27 (Mon-Thur)
Time: 5 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
Age: Rising 5th - 9th grade
Tuition: $160

Camp emphasis will be on stick skills, field play and positioning. We will cover defensive, offensive, drills along with line attack shooting and corners. There will be a focus on endurance training, body positioning and footwork as well as understanding the rules of the game.

Instructor: Chantal Ayers is an accomplished player and coach with experience at the international, collegiate and high school field hockey levels. Ayers is a native of Avon, CT, (Kingswood- Oxford High School) where she was a standout 3 sport athlete (Field Hockey, Ice Hockey and Lacrosse). In 2015, Chantal was inducted into the Kingswood-Oxford Hall of Fame for all three sports. A 1994 graduate of Holy Cross College (Worcester, MA), Chantal was an All-American in both Field Hockey and Lacrosse. She captained and was named MVP of both teams her junior and senior years. Named Field Hockey Patriot League Player of the year her senior year.

Football

Date: July 8-11 (Mon-Thur)
Time: 8 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Age: Rising 5th - 8th grade
Tuition: $160

This camp focuses on the fundamentals of football and includes skill development training for all positions. In the camp experience players will learn specific skills for their particular position, blocking and tackling fundamentals, defensive pass rush, pass coverage, proper throwing mechanics, pass receiving and running skills as well as special teams drills for long snappers, punters and kickers. We will have fun learning the "ins and outs" of the game and will provide organized competition at the end of each morning session.

Instructors: Steven Wright and staff. Coach Wright is a 15-year coaching veteran, entering his 10th season as a high school head coach. He assumed the reins of Cardinal Gibbons' football program in 2011. Over Coach Wright’s first 4 seasons Gibbons has won two conference titles, including a perfect 10-0 regular season in 2012. The Crusaders have produced 42 first-team all-conference players, 2 conference players of the year and 2 all-state selections during his tenure. Freshman Football Camp

This camp provides an opportunity for incoming 9th graders to work closely with the CGHS Football staff and understand the expectations of playing at Cardinal Gibbons. This experience serves as a preview of what practice is like and includes instruction on the philosophy and systems Cardinal Gibbons High School uses during the season. Position specific drill work, 7 on 7 pass skeleton drills, and offensive/defensive team sessions will be included, giving all participants a great preview of what the Crusader football experience is like.

Instructors: Steven Wright and staff. Coach Wright is a 15-year coaching veteran, entering his 10th season as a high school head coach. He assumed the reins of Cardinal Gibbons' football program in 2011. Over Coach Wright’s first 4 seasons Gibbons has won two conference titles, including a perfect 10-0 regular season in 2012. The Crusaders have produced 42 first-team all-conference players, 2 conference players of the year and 2 all-state selections during his tenure. They have also sent 26 players on to play NCAA football over the past 4 years. Coach Wright is a two-time Conference Coach of the Year and Cardinal Gibbons’ all-time winningest coach.

Lacrosse

Boys' Lacrosse

This camp will focus on the basics of lacrosse, including passing and catching, stick protection, ground ball techniques, shooting and defensive positioning.

Instructor: Assistant Coach Gordon Galloway will be the main instructor of the camp.  Gibbons Lacrosse won back to back State Titles in 2015 and 2016, making a Regional apperance last year in 2017.

Girls' Lacrosse

Camp emphasis will focus on teaching the fundamentals of lacrosse through small station work.  The skills we will focus on will include basic stick work, shooting, offense movement through small sided play and defensive positioning as well as game like scrimmages!

Instructor: Patricia Alexander was named Head Coach at Cardinal Gibbons in November of 2014. She led the Lady Crusaders to the State Championship game in all four years she has been at Gibbons with her first season falling short in double overtime. She won the next three years 2016, 2017 and 2018 State Championships! Alexander has played an instrumental role in the growth of club and high school girls’ lacrosse in the Triangle region over the past decade. Alexander currently coaches with Carolina Fever, helping Fever grow into a leading club in the Southeast. She is coaching the Under Armour All American Highlight team for a second year in a row ( 2017 & 2028).  At the high school level, Coach Alexander has amassed a 79-8 record at Gibbons and 43-22 record at Needham Broughton. She has a 122-30 overall record.

A 1994 graduate from Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland, Alexander was a four year starter on defense under renowned coach Diane Geppi Aikens. Alexander earned captain and MVP honors both her Junior and Senior years. As a senior she was also named to All-American and All-Maryland teams after leading her team to a final four appearance in College Park, MD.

Soccer

Boys' Soccer

This camp is for middle school players and rising freshman players that would like to get an additional week of training to work on becoming a better soccer player. The camp is designed to work with players on “ball mastery” and becoming a more confident player with the ball at their feet. The emphasis will be individual ball work to improve foot skills and then those skills will be put to practice in small game scenarios.

Instructor: Tim Healy is Cardinal Gibbons' varsity boys' soccer coach. Healy, a mathematics instructor at the school, led the program to NCHSAA 2A state championships in 2006 & 2008,  3A State Championship titles in 2010 ,2011 and 2014 and 2017 4A State Champions. In addition to  the 6 State Championships, Coach Healy has led the Crusaders to 8 Regional Championships and 11 Conference Championships. Coach Healy was Coerver North Carolina Director from 2007-2016 and currently works for Next Level Academy. He played college soccer at Xavier University in Ohio. Coach Healy also has coached both boys and girls for CASL.

Speed, strength, and agility training camps are perfect for dedicated athletes preparing for an upcoming sports season. This program empowers athletes to take their game to the next level, and ensures that they will be ready to overcome any challenges thrown their way. Every athlete will be pushed and challenged, both physically and mentally, to ensure that they are tapping into their maximum potential with each session. This sports training camp only allows up to 36 participants. Athletes will be pushed on an individual basis to achieve their maximum potential with each intense session. This specialty camp will ensure that athletes are ready to overcome any challenge that may be thrown their way during the next sports season.

Instructor: The Gibbons Speed, Strength, and Agility Camp will be staffed by one or more Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (CSCS), depending on the total number of campers and the age/gender of our participants.

Tennis

This camp will focus on fundamental tennis skills, including development of all strokes (forehand, backhand, etc.), serving, volleying, footwork, and conditioning.

Instructor: Andrew Tuttle joined the Cardinal Gibbons faculty in the fall of 2008 as a mathematics instructor and varsity boys'/girls' tennis coach. Tuttle coached the 2009 boys' squad to the school's fourth consecutive NCHSAA 2A dual-team state title, and an inaugural 3A championship in 2011. The 2011 girls' team earned the school's first 3A state championship.

This camp will stress the fundamentals of volleyball, with special emphasis on serving and passing. All basic skills will be taught as well team offense and team defense.

Instructor: Logan Barber enters his ninth season as Cardinal Gibbons' varsity volleyball coach. In Coach Barber's first three seasons (2010 - 2012), Cardinal Gibbons won three consecutive NCHSAA 3A state championships.

Wrestling

This an introductory program for beginning wrestlers ages 8 – 14. The focus will be on the fundamental techniques of youth wrestling with skills aimed to develop a well rounded wrestler from the 3 basic positions

Instructor: Gibbons Varsity Wrestling Coach, Jonathan Armfield. Coach Armfield is a 2-time nominee for the Cary Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year Award (2009, 2013), as well as a 2011 nominee for the Cary Teacher Leadership Award. He has won a conference title with Panther Creek High School and has coached multiple state placers and rising collegiate wrestlers. Coach Armfield earned a BS degree in Technology Education from North Carolina State University (’07) and also served in the United States Marine Corps prior to teaching.
